Necktie Envelope

With the snow continuing to fall, I paged through the February issue of Martha Stewart Living. I came across a how-to that Martha and company call a necktie envelope. I think it can be used for more then a necktie. I show you why in just a minute. It looked pretty simple and I was eager to take on another sewing project. You can also find the step-by-step instructions here.

Step 1: Print out the templates found online and piece them together like a puzzle.

Step 2: Cut out the template.

Step 3: Trace template onto fabric and cut out.

Step 4: Sew pieces together. I didn't take pictures of this part, but all the instructions are found on the online tutorial. Link posted above.

You need two coordinating fabrics, one for the lining and one for the outer fabric.
Side note* I purchased the purple fabric at JoAnn's fabric store. The striped fabric was a dress shirt that my husband intended to sell on ebay years ago. After much begging and pleading, I convinced him to let me chop it up and WA-LAH, it became the perfect lining.

After about 30 minutes of sewing, I completed my necktie envelope. With Valentine's day approaching, this personal envelope is an ideal package for a tie. It is also great to use when traveling. It will keep your tie wrinkle-free.

I think it also serves as a traveling jewelry case. It will keep your precious jewels safe and tangle free.
This was my favorite sewing project to date. Purple is my favorite color and I love the surprise lining that meets your eyes when you open the flap.

Happy Valentine's Day!

  1. That's great, Mollie! You know, it's a common problem for men to not know how to pack a tie correctly. They always get their neckties wrinkled because they just shove it in their bags and pockets. It's not neat to look at and it reflects the clumsiness of the wearer. This is a nice solution!
